Sex worker open univeristy.
Beyond victims and criminals.
April 2009, London.
Empower! is a sex-worker-organised project that will offer an
opportunity for sex workers and allies to come together for 4 days, to
explore the richness, diversity and contradictions of our profession
and to fight against the criminalization of our industry.
We will offer different workshops such as skill sharing (massage and
erotic massage, pole dancing, strip tease, legal aspects of sexwork,
HIV / Aids prevention etc ...),
discussions (feminism and sexwork, representation of sexworkers in
the media and popular culture...),
academic presentations (historical perspective on sexwork ...),
activism (presentation of different sexworkers projects) etc...
As implied in the name we want this open-university to be a tool of
empowerment for sex workers. You are invited to participate in the
organisation, propose a workshop, come for a debate or socialise.
The organisation is in its early stages so don't hesitate to bring your
ideas and get involved !

Weltbank finanziert Sexworker-Academy
World Bank To Teach Costa Rica Prostitutes to Avoid AIDS
SAN JOSE -- Dozens of prostitutes in Costa Rica will learn how to protect themselves from AIDS thanks to the advice of their colleagues within the framework of a program financed by the World Bank and being conducted by a local non-governmental organization.
The "La Sala" Association for the Improvement of Quality of Life of Sexual Workers, the NGO pursuing the project, aims to train a group of prostitutes so that they can be the ones who teach other women in the sex trade.
In remarks published Sunday in the daily La Nacion, one of the project's coordinators, Maria Diaz, said that the goal is to "empower sexual workers in the matter of prevention" of AIDS.
In all, the La Sala officials will train 22 prostitutes to impart the message to their colleagues.
The project will be started in San Jose but later it will be extended to the Caribbean port of Limon and the Pacific port of Puntarenas. It will cost $50,000, which has been contributed by the World Bank.
Diaz said that the techniques designed to avoid contracting AIDS will not be limited only to using condoms when engaging in sexual relations with customers, but also in teaching the women what their sexual rights are.
It is expected that the program will have a multiplier effect among the country's prostitutes and will also raise awareness among some 1,100 regular male customers and brothel owners.
"This part will be difficult. What we want is for the (brothel) managers to understand the advantages of having their locales free of HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) and for them to promote them as places where they apply preventive practices," she said.
The number of prostitutes in Costa Rica is not known for certain, but it has been documented that in addition to Costa Rican women, there are also large numbers of Nicaraguans, Dominicans and Colombians practicing the trade.

Between 10 per cent and 15 per cent of the female sex workers that participate in the
“La Sala” project run by the Latin American Institute for Health Prevention and
Education (ILPES, Instituto Latinoamericano de Prevención y Educación en Salud)
are migrants.

ILPES is a non-Governmental organisation that arose to prevent the spread of HIV in
the Costa Rican homosexual community, but has extended its services to other population
groups (transvestites, sex workers, prisoners, juvenile delinquents). ILPES developed an
assistance programme for sex workers called La Sala. In the focus group on this subject,
the ILPES representative reported that between 10 per cent and 15 per cent of the women
assisted were immigrants. ILPES closed its doors on April 30, 2001 due to financial
problems.

Sex Worker Open Universität (SWOU) London 2009 war ein Erfolg
Danke an alle Unterstützer
The organisers of London's first Sex Worker Open University (April 1-5 2009) would like to thank everyone who participated for making the event an enormous success. Over 200 sex workers, sex workers' rights activists, allies and visitors from the UK and abroad took part in workshops, discussions, actions and art exhibits over five days.
On the eve of the SWOU sex workers took to the streets for a 'Speak Out' against the criminalisation of the sex industry at the Eros Fountain at Piccadilly Circus, co-organised with the x:talk project.
The university then held its launch event at Queen Mary, University of London, where sex workers, activists and academics made presentations and showed films about sex workers' movements around the world, from Argentina and Costa Rica to New Zealand, Canada, Cambodia, Denmark, Germany and the UK. From action and academia to activist art: we followed up with the opening of the photography exhibit 'Prostitutes of Europe', featuring black and white images of sex workers from 12 European cities by Mathilde Bouvard. The photos gracing the main hall of the London Action Resource Centre (LARC) in East London formed the backdrop for two days of skills exchange and discussion, from practical sessions (erotic dance, self defence, emotional safety) to information and debate (feminist anti-prostitution arguments, anonymity, sex worker outreach projects). The event closed with a plenary on 'where to go now' and a party with sex worker performances at Ramparts Social Centre.
The SWOU was featured in The Evening Standard, The Independent, The Guardian and London Lite. Press coverage of sex workers coming together to share experiences and skills, and make noise and politics offered a welcome alternative to the normally negative, stereotypical and sensationalist media representations of the sex industry.
A special thank you to all those who ran workshops and made presentations, organised, set up and cleaned the venues, baked cakes,
cooked food and ran the bar, DJ'd and performed, travelled from far and wide to join us, and otherwise helped to make this amazing event happen. The enthusiasm and solidarity generated by the weekend will now carry us forward to new projects: a sex worker magazine, a social networking site - www.swarm-up.org - and a sex worker film festival in London in autumn 2009.

NEARLY two dozen sex workers have been rounded up by Phnom Penh's Department of Social Affairs and sent to NGOs to learn new skills, officials said Thursday, as an anti-prostitution sweep continues in the capital.
Social affairs official Ban Vutha said that 22 women had been sent to the NGOs Friends International and the Women's Network Organisation. [So kann man der Helferindustrie natürlich auch die Auftragslage sichern. Anm.]
"We sent them there because we believe they will be able to learn many new skills," he said. "Our department cannot keep them here because we are not able to support them, train them or create jobs for them yet."
The drive to get prostitutes off the streets and into alternative employment was launched on Monday, said Saing Sopheakvichet, deputy governor of Tuol Kork district, adding that the campaign was launched to restore "order in the city".
"Most of the women who get arrested are the same women over and over again, which means our efforts in educating them have been ineffective," he said. "Many of these women take up this job voluntarily because they can earn a lot of money easily."
