Die Junge Sexarbeiter Gewerkschaftsgeschichte
Gewerkschaftliche Selbstorganisation von Sexarbeitern:
Eine Forschungsstudie über die junge Geschichte
Sex worker unionisation:
an exploratory study of emerging collective organisation
Gregor Gall
Professor of Industrial Relations, University of Hertfordshire
ABSTRACT
In a number of Western economies in the last two decades, sex workers have begun
to organise themselves in, and be organised by, trade unions for the first time. This
article examines the salient processes and outcomes of this phenomenon. It firstly
explores the influence of the prostitutes’ rights movements and the emergence of the
‘sex work’ discourse where the selling of sex and sexual services are regarded as a form
of ‘emotional’ or ‘erotic’ labour. The advances in sex worker union organisation are
recounted before assessing the forces leading to unionisation and those forces that act
as impediments to unionisation. The conclusion of the article is that extant sex worker
unionisation is a fragile and embryonic phenomenon.

Auxiliary ESPU member, Slava Osowska will open with a short presentation on the role of prostitutes in organizing the Industrial Workers of the World.
Women’s support of workers’ strikes are key to worker self determination. Many women worked as prostitutes in early America as it gave them ability to migrate. Use of phrases and words associated with prostitution such as ‘Red Light District’ and ‘punk’ will reveal the relationship between freedom loving people; organized workers and prostitutes.

Between Organising and Exclusion: Trade Union Strategies and Undocumented Migrant Workers
by Özge Berber Agtas, Beate Amler and Luciole Sauviat
Undocumented migrants or migrants with precarious residence status are generally also vulnerable workers. Some of the problems that these workers face are: bad pay, no accident insurance, employers withholding pay, long working hours and sexual harassment. Trade unions are organisations dedicated to defending labour's interests, however, some also deal with broader issues that concern migrant workers in general and undocumented migrant workers in particular. One of the well-known mottos of the organised working class is the notion of solidarity; ideally, this maxim should extend to all workers.
...
Studies conducted in Germany have shown that racism, social Darwinism and chauvinism are as widespread among trade union members, as among other parts of the population (Zeuner 2007, Bibouche/Held 2002).
There are also more practical problems: it may be difficult to reach undocumented workers as they may hide their status; likewise it is not easy to keep them as reliable paying union members since they often have to switch places, jobs and sectors. As it is the case for domestic workers, the employment contracts between a family or private individual, and a domestic worker are "a-typical". In such situations, collective bargaining is difficult as there are no employers' associations to negotiate with (ETUC 2005).
...
The most common way to support undocumented migrant workers is to provide legal assistance, including: negotiation with legal authorities over residence and work permits, visas, information on regularisation procedures, legal and labour rights and supporting workers to appeal to the labour court.
...
However organising undocumented migrants is not just about organising members within unions; it is also very important to question the legal system and states' practices. Therefore, it requires political will and consent of the trade unions to support and organise undocumented migrant workers.

Hurenbewegung/Sex Worker Movement erforscht:
Das Erwachsen und die Unsicherheiten
der sozialen Sexarbeiter Selbstorganisation
The Emergence and
Uncertain Outcomes of
Prostitutes’ Social
Movements
Von Lilian Mathieu
UNIVERSITÉ PARIS X-NANTERRE
European Journal of Women's Studies 2003; 10; 29
This article is a comparative study of five prostitutes’ social movements.
The emergence of these movements is one of the major developments in the politics of prostitution:
for the first time, prostitutes are politically organizing and
expressing their claims and grievances
in the public debate about prostitution
– a debate from which they are usually excluded.
But, as is the case for most stigmatized populations,
this pretension to enter into the public debate is faced with many difficulties.
Some of these are inherent to the world of prostitution,
which is an informal, competitive and violent world,
in which leaders face constant challenges to establish and maintain their authority and legitimacy.
The article also emphasizes the crucial, but ambiguous, role
played by alliances between prostitutes and people from other parts of society (especially feminists).
Prostitutes’ dependence on these supporters leads the author
to consider their social movements to be heteronomous mobilizations.

it could be said that the characteristics of their group confront prostitutes with an impossible choice:
it has been shown that the voice solution is difficult, impossible or, more often, unimaginable for them.
What seems to be the easiest and most accessible alternative, exit, also meets with many obstacles, such as drug dependency, submission to a procurer, or lack of professional qualifications preventing them from finding normal jobs.
Prostitutes seem, in most cases, to be restricted to a form of loyalty to the world of prostitution, a forced loyalty comprising resignation and fatalism.
As long as the prostitutes’ relation to their condition remains ambivalent,
social movements fighting for the recognition of prostitutes’ rights will face huge difficulties to mobilize them, and will remain marginal.

Seiten 32-35 ...
- Gesetze - Law:
Laws regulating or prohibiting prostitution can have a direct effect on the prostitutes’ ability to organize. - Herkunft - Poor social background:
The poor capacity to engage in social protest can be explained by the social origins of most prostitutes.
Prostitutes originate from the lowest classes of society.
Most [besser: many] prostitutes also live in extremely precarious conditions.
Low levels of education.
Precarious living conditions. - Ausgrenzung - Stigma:
Prostitutes are ordinarily considered as one of the most marginalized and stigmatized social groups.
The stigmatization of prostitutes adds to the precariousness of their living conditions by forcing them to constantly disguise their activities (they must hide from their parents, their children, the police and, sometimes, social workers).
Illegal immigrant
Transsexuals
Homosexuals
The indignity and secrecy that affect prostitution are among the major factors that prevent prostitutes from protesting publicly against their unhappy endemic condition.
Feeling that they have no legitimate right to exert this competence and enter the public debate (Bourdieu, 1980).
What seems to be the main obstacle confronted by sex worker movements is the ambivalence that most prostitutes feel towards their activity, an ambivalence that is directly related to the stigma of prostitution.
Because they experience the stigma attached to ‘sex work’ on a daily basis and (more or less consciously) share the socially dominant negative opinion towards this occupation, they are not entirely convinced that prostitution is really a profession that deserves recognition.
The leaders of the movements who entered into protest and created a professional organization as a way to give up prostitution are examples of this ambivalence: Their defection [Abtrünnigkeit, Treuebruch] shows the weight of the dominant pejorative [abwertende] representations of prostitution that have the power to compel [nötigen] and to be shared by the very people they discredit.
For them, the exit always seems more valuable than the voice (s.u.). - Sozialstruktur im informellen, nur teillegalisiertem Sexmarkt - Social Sex Market Structure:
Es gibt keine horizontalen Bindungen (wg. archaischer Wettbewerbsstruktur)
Lack of structure and organization of the world of prostitution itself.
A population that lacks the necessary resources to initiate a collective protest.
Characteristics of the prostitute population, one which is generally marked by a very low level of pragmatic competence for collective action.
The commercial logic of the world of prostitution contradicts collective action by making competition prevail upon solidarity.
World of prostitution appears to be a social world with extremely weak cohesion.
Prostitutes do not belong to a real ‘goup’ or ‘community’, but constitute an informal population united only by their common activities, common living conditions and common stigmatization.
This endemic deficit of internal cohesion that affects the world of prostitution is one of the strongest obstacles to protest, as it makes free-riding strategies more attractive than collective action.

www.sexworker.at/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=31106#31106 (Beim Thema: Ausstieg/Umstieg)
www.sexworker.at/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=919 (Wortgebrauch)
www.sexworker.at/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=817 (Sexworker Academy)

Sex workers face several severe challenges!
Answer to Thierries impulse statement which I like to extend and bring to our common awareness:
- Competition: Which is very high in unregulated markets. Since our economy is partly criminalised and a grey market, solidarity is not easy. Solidarity needs structures and a foundation in order to flourish (unconditional love, basic income grant, job quota for sex workers and ex-sex workers within the helper industry and NGOs, affirmative action policy).
- Exclusion: By law we are not allowed to cooperate, work together, have management, profit from prostitution gain, move and settle free, get help from the police, be part of organized pension plans... On one hand side we have to work on these atrocities and on the other we have to develop new infrastructure and missing support institutions ourselves: sex worker academies, sex work research centres, sex work insurance, sex worker saving bank and micro credit institute, sex work cooperatives, sex work self regulatory boards, sex worker union, sex work intra-peer supervision, sex worker elderly homes...
- Moral hazard: Discretion, secrecy and double life, which we are forced to developed as countermeasure to taboo, stigma and alienation, makes it easy for a-social profiteers or drop-outs. Social control among us is low and can't hardly be improved. Whore culture and unionisation can be a solution or countermeasure.
- Self fulfilling prophecy: The stigma meme, mainstream culture and religious traditions have the capability to reiterate itself. We need to break that vicious circle. Besides, we must be alert how energy consuming and draining the fight and involvement in the public whorephobic discourse can be and that due to Self Value Management many sex workers decide to stay away in order to prevent SWBO (sex worker burn out).
- Scapegoating mechanism: The War on Whores has more to do with stabilizing society (due to misinformation, projection of suppressed emotions, class separation 'divide et impera'...), than with fighting sex for money between consenting adults. De-constructing societal psychological mechanisms is so important. Karpman Triangle, Intersectionality, Othering, Sexual Politics... give great explanations. We need to teach Stigma Management to our fellow sex workers.
- Youth bound business: Like children, pupils, compulsory military/civil service, students... all these are time limited life periods, which makes is hard to establish self organizing and representational structures within and establish an inheritance mechanism for these structures and culture. Up to now every generations needed to start from scrap. Now we have formed sex worker movement and history and use modern information and self management technologies (ICT, Liquid Democracy).
- Outplacment: And as answer for the individual sex worker on the youth bound business limitations we need to teach ourselves about financial planning, security, Whore Carer Management, Exit Strategies and Sex Worker Outplacement in whore college and SWOU. Otherwise sex workers can become trapped in poverty, addiction and a closet of shame.
- Heterogeneity: Sex workers come from all traits of life and often have very few in common. Some have very low level of education or knowledge of the local culture due to poor social background... Many fall to the mechanism to degrade others in order to not feel their own precariousness (escorts v whores, porn actors v whores, local whores v migrants...). Inclusion among ourselves becomes a hard task.
- Negative energies: These can come form shy, negative customers, from the media and public discourse, from drained out old sex worker fellows and social workers... To develop an invigorating community spirit is key. Inclusion of young successful new sex workers in functions of the movement is important (human resources).
- Trapped between voice and exit: Preventive Self-Outing and Legalisation becomes the root qualification of modern sex workers (registration, taxation). Hence peer education in Stigma-Management and business coaching is so vital to develop a sustainable sex biz model.
- Insecurity: Ever faster changing life and working conditions in a globalized over-poppulated resource restricted world governed by corporatocracy does not stay away from the oldest profession. We have to master many contradictions and transitions and then maybe become mature enlightened avant-garde role model of modern flexible worker, independent entrepreneur and sole proprietor of one-self.

BDSM-Dienstleisterinnen wollen eine Gewerkschaft
BINDING ARBITRATION
S&M GALS DIG IN THEIR HEELS WITH UNION BID
By REBECCA ROSENBERG

October 6, 2008

POWER PLAY: Local dommes like (clockwise from left) Goddess Haley, Miss Juliette and Lady Zombie are looking to unionize.
New York's dominatrixes have been getting spanked by the economy recently - and now, they're lashing back.
Already reeling from a series of local prostitution raids, dommes have also had to grapple with disobedient clients who can't afford to pay for their punishments.
To address the double-whammy hitting their industry, many of them want to form a political-action committee and union to represent their interests.
"It's never been worse. Business is down 70 percent," said Mistress Johanna, owner of Chelsea's Le Salon DeSade. "We've had all these busts, and now the economy is out of control. The uncertainty is torturing us."
On Thursday, 10 dominatrixes at DeSade were dressed to the hilt - in red corsets, latex minis and thigh-high boots - with no one to flog.
On what used to be one of the house's busiest nights, only two customers came in, and the phone barely rang. The few clients who still trickle in have scaled back their sessions.
Most houses on Dungeon Alley, the cluster of S&M clubs in Midtown, complain of similar woes.
Mistresses say the economic downturn and recent spat of busts - namely of Rapture NYC, Rebecca's Hidden Chamber and Avalon - has created an atmosphere of fear and panic.
More than a dozen dominatrixes and dungeon owners have retained John Campbell, partner of the Tilem and Campbell law firm.
"This isn't like the escort industry, where there's a lot of illegality and everyone knows it," said Campbell, who also represents escort agencies. "In the BDSM [bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism] industry, virtually everyone was operating under the belief that what they were doing was legal."
The law is unclear, and this poses a major challenge to dominatrixes who want to run legal businesses but can't figure out what is and isn't allowed, said Campbell.
So now, they've taken matters into their own hands. About two weeks ago, the industry had an emergency meeting. The women discussed forming an informal union to represent their interests.
Johanna's business partner, who requested anonymity, is laying the groundwork.
He's drafting paperwork to start DomPAC, which will lobby lawmakers to rewrite prostitution laws to protect BDSM practices.
Dommes hope this will pave the way for them to unionize, so that one day, they can have 401(k)s, health insurance and unemployment benefits.
"Ultimately, this is about America . . . This is about having the right to express yourself in the lifestyle of your choice," Mistress Johanna's business partner said.

Top-down Konflikt

Alert to you all regarding a meeting that is being organized by
colleagues at the Karnataka Sex Workers Union, and the New Trade Union Initiative (NTUI, India), on Trade Union Protections for Sex Workers.
There will be one session on the 30th, on "Trafficking, Migration and Sex Work," and an
all-day meeting on the 31st, with three panels on "Trade Unions and Sex Work."
These sessions are open to all WSF participants.
In addition, they are sponsoring a CLOSED meeting on this issue on February 1.
It is for those trade unions who, at a minimum, come from an understanding that workers in the sex sector are entitled to basic labor rights, including the right to organize and bargain collectively, to be free of discrimination and to be free from forced labor.
It is also for sex worker participants who are committed to exploring a union strategy (maybe in addition to other strategies of collectivization).
If you think you may be interested in the closed session, please do contact:

Gewerkschaftsarbeit in Johannisburg
Interview mit Louise Thipe
Fotos
Was tut deine Gewerkschaft für Sexarbeiterinnen?
Warum gerade in Deutschland?
