These positions are part of the new Scarlet Alliance International Program
team. The positions offer successful applicants the opportunity to work in
exciting roles that promote skills sharing and partnerships between sex
workers and sex worker organisations in the Asia Pacific region. By
increasing advocacy and leadership capacity as well as strategic
partnerships the program contributes to strengthening the sex worker rights
movement. Scarlet Alliance is a well respected sex worker organisation, with
a strong ethical basis, and a commitment to best practice approaches of sex
worker involvement and self determination.

All applicants should read and follow the instructions provided in the
Application Kit for the particular position. Note that not all positions
have the same closing date and whilst all require international travel some
positions are based in the Sydney office and others have the flexibility to

International Project Officer (part time) 0.4 (equivalent of two days per

The International Project Officer will assist local sex workers and sex
worker networks in Timor L'este to develop stronger advocacy and leadership
capacity and build autonomous networks. The role includes travelling to, and
working in, Timor L'este including meeting and networking with local sex
worker leaders and documenting and reporting on the self-identified needs of
local sex worker communities.

Note: This position may be based at the Sydney office or may be based at a

The International Project Officer will assist local sex workers and sex
worker networks in nominated countries, including Fiji, to increase capacity
and build autonomous networks. The role includes substantial international
travel and work in other countries including meeting and networking with
local sex worker leaders. Convening or assisting local sex workers to
convene sex worker community meetings, documenting self-identified needs of
local sex worker communities and assisting the group to address these issues
are all part of this exciting role.

Alert to you all regarding a meeting that is being organized by
colleagues at the Karnataka Sex Workers Union, and the New Trade Union Initiative (NTUI, India), on Trade Union Protections for Sex Workers.

There will be one session on the 30th, on "Trafficking, Migration and Sex Work," and an

all-day meeting on the 31st, with three panels on "Trade Unions and Sex Work."

These sessions are open to all WSF participants.



In addition, they are sponsoring a CLOSED meeting on this issue on February 1.

It is for those trade unions who, at a minimum, come from an understanding that workers in the sex sector are entitled to basic labor rights, including the right to organize and bargain collectively, to be free of discrimination and to be free from forced labor.

It is also for sex worker participants who are committed to exploring a union strategy (maybe in addition to other strategies of collectivization).

Louise Thipe kommt aus aus Johannisburg und ist Präsidentin der Dienstleistungsgewerkschaft SACCAWU (South African Commercial Catering Allied Workers Union). Louise Thipe wurde 1999 als erste Frau in di Position der 1. Vorsitzenden der 107.533 Mitglieder zählenden SACCAWU gewählt. Die 49-Jährige hat drei Kinder und ist mehrfache Großmutter. Auf dem Weltsozialforum 2009 in Belem/Brasilien* ist sie eingeladen, um über den gewerkschaftlichen Schutz von Sexarbeiterinnen zu sprechen.



Deine Gewerkschaft organisiert ArbeiterInnen aus dem Bereich Handel, Catering, Hotelgewerbe, was hat sie mit Sexarbeit zu tun?

Louise Thipe: Wir sind mit dem Thema konfrontiert, seitdem wir Arbeiterinnen aus dem Hotelgewerbe rekrutieren. Dort findet ein Teil der Sexarbeit statt. Das heißt nicht, dass alle, die im Hotelgewerbe tätig sind, auch in der Prostitution arbeiten. Aber wir sprechen von einem wachsenden Sektor. Und mit wachsender Arbeitslosigkeit strömen zunehmend Männer in diese ehemalige Frauendomäne. Also, wenn ich von Dienstleistungsgewerbe rede, dann verstehe ich darunter auch die Sexarbeit.



Was tut deine Gewerkschaft für Sexarbeiterinnen?

Louise Thipe: Erst seit 2008 haben wir eine Kongressresolution, wonach wir Sexarbeiterinnen organisieren und repräsentieren wollen. Dieser Beschluss muss jetzt umgesetzt werden. Es müssen Programme und Strategien entwickelt werden, um Sexarbeiterinnen in die Organisationen zu integrieren, ihnen eine Platz einzuräumen.



Warum bist du auf dem Weltsozialforum 2009?

Louise Thipe: Zum einen um die Interaktion mit anderen Gewerkschaften zu verstärken, die Sexarbeiterinnen organisieren und vertreten. Zum Beispiel mit der Gewerkschaft ver.di aus Deutschland. Zum anderen möchte ich auch mit den Selbstorganisationen von Sexarbeiterinnen eine weltweite Vernetzung aufbauen, die es leichter macht, unsere Ziele, Arbeitsrechte für Sexarbeiterinnen durchzusetzen, zu realisieren.



Was ist der nächste Schritt?

Louise Thipe: Erstmal dieses Forum zu nutzen. Und dann würden wir uns sehr freuen, wenn es im Herbst eine Möglichkeit gäbe, zu einem weltweiten Treffen der Gewerkschaften, die Sexarbeiterinnen vertreten, nach Deutschland zu kommen. Wir werden unseren Wunsch an die deutschen Gewerkschaften ver.di und DGB herantragen.



Warum gerade in Deutschland?

Louise Thipe: Weil in Deutschland eines der fortschrittlichsten Prostitutionsgesetze weltweit gilt und die Gewerkschaften hier schon einige gute Veranstaltungen mit internationaler Beachtung durchgeführt haben.

Today we are pleased to announce the birth of STRASS (Syndicat du TRAvail du Sexe = Union of Sex Work) following the European Conference on prostitution that took place last Friday 20 March at the Théâtre de l'Odéon and after the Pute Pride which have brought together over 300 people.

The statutes are currently being tabled in the Paris Prefecture formalizing thus the existence of our union. The administration of the first union was elected Friday at the Conference on prostitution for a provisional three months to organize the recruitment of members and the first elections of our representatives.

We are proud to announce already since Friday the accession of at least 200 members and the existence of 5 federations nationally and still expect other forms of membership in particular from the country.

One of our first actions will be to influence the next European elections candidates by reminding our demands. A letter will be sent soon asking them to focus on the manifesto and declaration of rights for sex workers in Europe, written at the European Conference of sex workers in 2005 in Brussels.

Le lobby abolitionniste du Mouvement du Nid continue de mener sa campagne contre notre travail à l’occasion des élections européennes de juin.

Nous tenons donc à rappeler que le Mouvement du Nid s’arroge une parole d’expert sur la prostitution dont il n’a aucune légitimité. Les vrais experts sur la prostitution, ce sont nous les travailleurs et travailleuses du sexe.

Le Mouvement du Nid comme les autres mouvements qui veulent notre abolition sont déconnectés de nos réalités et déforment notre parole pour mieux maintenir leur pouvoir.
Il faut cesser immédiatement le business abolitionniste qui s’appuie sur des millions d’euros de financement public.

Sex workers want a Europe without the Mouvement du Nid


The lobby of the abolitionist Mouvement du Nid continues with the launch of a new campaign against our work for the European elections in June.

We therefore wish to remind that the Mouvement du Nid which pretends being the expert on prostitution has no legitimacy. The real experts on prostitution are us, the sex workers.

The Mouvement du Nid like other movements that want our abolition is disconnected from our reality and distort our speech to better maintain their power.
The abolitionist business based on millions of euros of public funding must immediately end.

The Mouvement du Nid, for its part, manages at least 960 000 euros of annual budget to preach their Christian values. http://www.fondationscelles.org/index.p ... Itemid=111

- We do not want their status of “socially inadapted person” which excludes us from the rest of society and makes us dependent on their charity.

- We do not want their “reinsertion” which means being exploited for less than the minimum wage like with the “Dagobert workshops” proposed by the Amicale du Nid.

- We do not want their crapy analysis saying that trafficking in human beings is caused by customers demand to justify increasingly repressive laws and without ever questioning the real reasons that are related to the migration control of foreign sex workers.

We demand that candidates for European elections get inspired on the contrary from the claims of sex workers.

It may be the world's oldest profession, but when it comes to organizing to fight for the rights and protections most workers take for granted, prostitutes lag far behind workers in other occupations. It's a situation that Maxine Doogan, who has worked as a prostitute for 20 years, is hoping to change.


Maxine Doogan is the founder of the San Francisco-based Erotic Service Providers Union (ESPU www.espu-ca.org ), a national organization she started in 2004 with the lofty aim of organizing workers in all aspects of the sex trade—from prostitutes and strippers to porn actors and sensual masseuses, as well as the myriad industry support staff, including photographers, security guards and drivers—into one big union. She will be in Edmonton as part of this year's May Week Labour Arts Festival to speak on a panel about her efforts.


"What we really need to do is we need to organize the sex industry on an industrial level," explains Doogan over the phone from San Francisco, "because each of our particular situations, whether we’re dancers or we’re prostitutes or we’re porn actors and actresses, the certain labour practices in each of those different sectors are affecting those other parts of the industry—they’re affecting each other but nobody really understands that or knows about it or is talking about it."


Doogan came to this realization when she discovered that at the same time prostitutes like her were being arrested on the streets for engaging in the sex trade, erotic dancers in clubs were being forced by club owners to engage in sexual acts as part of their job, even if they didn't necessarily want to. It motivated her to look beyond her own profession and start thinking about the industry as a whole.


"I started attending the San Francisco Labor Council meetings and learning about the larger conditions of labour, started attending labour schools, and really started to learn what organized labour was about and how other kinds of workers—in teachers’ unions, postal workers’ unions, health care workers’ unions—they’re all being subjected to the same kinds of oppressions that sex industry workers are, and it’s just that we can’t really see that because we don’t talk about sex, we don’t talk about sex trade workers."


Doogan says that despite the stigma that is still attached to people who make their living by providing what she calls "erotic services," the basic concerns are the same as those of any other worker:

• having control over the terms of employment,
• being able to ensure appropriate health and safety on the job and
• being in a position to bargain for better conditions.

Unfortunately, in many sex trade professions, most notably prostitution, the law makes realizing those goals much more difficult.


"Our labour contracts exist in the criminalization of prostitution laws. They define how we get to work or not work, where it is that we work, and so they really create the negative work conditions that we are subjected to without our permission," she explains. "So the voters, the people, the legislators, I call them our bosses—they have set the terms, they are the ones that are doing the enforcement."





In San Francisco, the ESPU and other groups tried unsuccessfully to change some of these dynamics through Proposition K, which would have effectively decriminalized prostitution by barring police from investigating and prosecuting it. While the initiative ultimate failed by a 60-40 margin, Doogan says it did manage to change the debate about the sex trade, which is a major part of the union's current work.


"The stage we’re at right now, it’s worker empowerment. It’s about gaining some esteem around the fact that you’re not a criminal, you’re a worker and you have rights."


For other professions organized by ESPU—which has annual dues of just $25—labour relations can look more like the traditional union model.


"In the dancer’s situation a collective bargaining contract is going to look like dancers coming together and creating their own contracts and going to the owners of the dance clubs and the managers of the dance clubs. The workers want control over their work conditions and how much they’re paying for, they want that clearly in writing, but the dance clubs are always the ones who write the contracts and the workers are forced to sign it. Either you sign it or you can’t work," she says.


"This is really a labour issue, this is a workers' right to organize issue, the right to be in an association, the right to negotiate collectively so you can have some equal protection under the law, like everybody wants on their job."

Sex Workers Demand Anti-Discrimination Protections:
Australian Sex Workers Association National Conference in Brisbane, November 2008


Scarlet Alliance, the Australian Sex Workers Association, holds its national meeting in Brisbane this week, with sex workers attending from all over Australia, discussing laws, rights and anti-discrimination protections. The national group has been meeting since 1989 and continues to be the leading voice for sex workers in Australia.

"Sex workers in Australia work in legal, decriminalised and tolerated environments," Janelle Fawkes, CEO of Scarlet Alliance said at their national meeting today. "Sex work workplaces are legitimate, sex work is legitimate, and our sex worker voices are legitimate. We want anti-discrimination laws to make sex worker rights legitimate as well."

The annual meeting is held in a different city each year, attracts Australian sex worker representatives and international visitors, and is the premier Australian networking event for sex workers.

Queensland currently leads Australia in anti-discrimination protections for sex workers. These laws have been tested in a variety of ways, and Queensland sex workers have been able to access civil rights including equity in advertising costs. Sex workers in other state and territory jurisdictions are waiting for similar rights to be granted to them.

"Anti-discrimination protections in Australia are a patchwork of laws," Janelle Fawkes clarified today. "We need each state and territory Government to step up to the challenge of protecting the human rights of sex workers, and catch up with Queensland."

"It's not acceptable to discriminate against sex workers in Queensland," Janelle Fawkes concluded today. "We applaud the work that has been done already in Queensland, and are looking forward to continuing to lobby in other states and territories to meet the benchmark set by Queensland."

They are hopeful about finding a solution to their problems and changing society’s approach toward sex workers. They will organize an awareness walk to bring attention to their issues



Turkey's sex workers seek to establish a union

An initiative to establish a union for sex workers in Turkey has been proceeding slowly but patiently for almost a year.

Several activists plan to establish a trade union to protect the health, security and education rights of sex workers in Turkey, where the majority of them work without licenses or social security.

“People should have the right to voluntarily chose to be a sex worker. One has to have sovereignty over his or her body,” said Buse Kiliçkaya, an activist from Ankara-based Pembe Hayat Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender, or LGBT, association. Kiliçkaya said if they can establish a union, it would be the first for Turkey’s sex workers.

Activists and sex workers are hopeful about establishing a union, believing that it will help acknowledgment of this type of labor as a viable profession and will protect their rights in many aspects.

“We are against forced sex labor,” said Kiliçkaya. “But this is the oldest profession on Earth and this will continue to be done by some people. This is why those people’s rights need to be protected.”

Prostitution is mentioned in the Turkish Penal Code and sex workers have to be registered according to the law. However, statistics show that many sex workers are unregistered and have no health or social security.

“Only 126 sex workers are registered in Istanbul, but the real number is much higher than this,” said Muhtar Çokar, a doctor who helps sex workers access free and easy medical support.

“The number of registered sex workers in Turkey is 3,500 according to police data,” said Çokar. “That is too small a number compared to Ankara Trade Chamber, which said there are around 100,000 unregistered sex workers in total in Turkey.”

Activists believe sex workers are exposed to discrimination from society as well as by state authorities. Transsexual and transvestite sex workers in particular are beaten and harassed by clients or sometimes by the police.

“There is a social consensus that if you are a sex worker then you deserve to be exposed to violence, sexual harassment and discrimination,” said Kiliçkaya, adding that this approach has to change.



Union needed

“The first sex union was established in Argentina during the 1970s. Holland and Hungary also have unions for sex workers. Why don’t we have one?” asked Belgin Çelik, a Lambda Istanbul activist.

Although the majority of sex workers are biologically women, transsexuals and transvestites are usually more active in protecting their rights.

“Most woman work as a sex worker secretly, some of them have families, and cannot declare their names. Another reason is that transsexuals and transvestites were more commonly harassed, beaten and insulted,” said Kiliçkaya, explaining why they are more willing to unite and defend their rights.

The initiative’s meetings are closed to the press at the moment.

“The initiative may not bring about a union in the end, this is why the NGOs and political parties supporting the initiative have not declared their names,” said Sinem, a sex worker and activist from Pembe Hayat LGBT.

But the efforts of the initiative will be significant, since it will draw attention to sex workers’ problems, such as having social security or health insurance and a retirement salary.







‘Red umbrella walk’ against discrimination

The activists will organize for the first time a walk titled “Red Umbrella” on March 3, International Sex Workers Day in Ankara, simultaneously with the entire world. The sex workers and NGO activists will try to voice the many problems of those who are not seen or approved by society but who are part of it and suffering.

Seit Jahrhunderten kämpfen wir Frauen für unsere Rechte und haben gemeinsam viel erreicht: das Sichtbarmachen der Unterdrückung von Frauen, Öffentlichkeit über Gewalt gegen Frauen und Mädchen, Arbeiterinnenrechte, Zugang zu Bildung, Wahlrecht…
Wir gehen durch den 15. Bezirk, weil wir dort wohnen und weil wir mit der Frauendemonstration Frauen in ihr­em Wohn- und Arbeitsbereich stärken wollen. Und wir gehen durch den 15. Bezirk, weil dort im Sommer und Herbst 2004 Frauen, die auf der Strasse als Prostituierte arbeiten, angegriffen wurden.

In der Auseinandersetzung um Prostitution werden die Frauen, die die Sexarbeit machen, verachtet und ver­folgt. Ganz allgemein werden Frauen als Huren oder Schlam­pen beschimpft, um sie zu beleidigen oder bloß zu stellen, unabhängig davon, ob wir als Verkäuferin, Hausfrau, Handwerkerin, Akademikerin oder Sexarbeiterin arbeiten. Wir lassen uns nicht in gute oder schlechte Frauen spalten! Frauenverachtung trifft jede von uns und wir stehen dagegen auf!
Wir sehen Sexarbeit als Arbeit und kämpfen für mehr Rechte und für Respekt für Sexarbeiterinnen. Frauen entscheiden sich zur Sexarbeit, um Geld zu verdienen, das jede zum Leben braucht. Es sind in erster Linie prekäre Arbeitsbedingungen, die häufig mit Gewalt und gesellschaftlicher Ächtung verbunden sind. Wir wissen aber auch, daß viele Frauen zur Sexarbeit gezwungen werden - von Ehemännern, Freunden, Vätern, Brüdern, Zuhältern und Frauenhändlern. Auch miese Arbeitsbedingungen, schlecht bezahlte Arbeit und Arbeitsverbote (z.B. gerade für Migrantinnen) zwingen Frauen in die Prostitution. Kämpfen wir gemeinsam gegen jede Form von Zwangsprostitution und Gewalt gegen Frauen!

(Das starre Kastensystem behindert zwar soziale Durchlässigkeit aber liefert Stabilität, indem es die Gesellschaft als Körper sieht mit Bevölkerungsgruppen entsprechend der verschiedenen Organe mit seinen festgelegten Funktionen.)

Sie sind irgendwie als Firma als auch gewerkschaftlich organisiert und bekommen dadurch Krankengeld und Rente, worüber gemeinsam in Gruppen entschieden wird (Genossenschaftsmodell einzelner Kooperativen).

Mitarbeiten darf nur jemand, der einen Bürgen benennen kann bzw. sich einkauft und stets zuverlässig und pünklich ist. Die Ausbildung wird von älteren übernommen und dauert ca. 2 Monate leaning by doing. Es entstand eine stolze Gemeinschaft deren Tradtion inzwischen auch in einen Besuch von Prince Charles gewürdigt wurde.

Das zunächst chaotisch anmutende aber höchst effiziente und durchaus humane Arbeits- und Lebens-Konzept war seinerzeit der letzte Schrei von Business-schools. Es hat sich nämlich als ein System im informellen Sektor entwickelt, welches mit herrausragender Zuverlässigkeit von 1 Zustellungsfehler pro Million Aufträge auszeichnet.

Viele Elemente der Aufbau-, Ablauf- und Sozialorganisation lassen sich gut mit Escortservice oder Straßenstricharbeit in Beziehung setzen, also mit Lieferservice für emotional-sexuelle Zufriedenheit...

Die politische Förderung von Kooperativen im Bereich Sexwork scheint der einzig logisch konsequente Weg,
will man jeden Vorwurf von Ausbeutung in der Prostitution bereits im Ansatz entkräften.

So ist weder der Staat als Zuhälter aktiv (abgesehen von der Besteuerung. Staatliche Bordelle gab es z.B. unter Solon im antiken Griechenland oder im Mittelalter bei den von Städten oder Kirchen geleiteten öffentlichen Hurenhäusern z.B. in Frankfurt),
noch kann ein Unternehmer (Rotlichtviertel-Monopolist aufgrund staatlicher Ghettoisierung) oder gar eine unsichtbare Hand des Marktes isolierte Sexworker ausbeuten (überbordende Freier-Konsumentenmacht in Nachfagermärkten).

Sexworker können sich besser gegenseitig gegen zumeist männliche Kraft oder Gewalt schützen und auch einer überbordenden Kundenmacht in Nachfragermärkten kann ein ausgleichendes Gegengewicht entgegengestellt werden
(Strukturelle Sicherheit durch Wahl der Gesellschaftsform).
