Kevin Myers: Rampantte Rabbitte has to learn that moralising prohibitions upon human appetites never work
By Kevin Myers
Tuesday February 08 2011
According to its justice spokesman, the Labour Party will introduce the "Swedish" laws on prostitution -- by which it is illegal to buy sexual favours, and the male client commits the crime, while the woman remains innocent. And so, thanks to Rampantte Rabbitte, we are back to sex again.
What is it about this subject that causes such widespread irrationality? Why is it laudable for me to pay a woman to massage my scalp or my feet, but if I pay her to massage the parts half-way between, it's disgusting and wicked and someone should dial 999? Yet if no money is involved, this middle-massage is regarded as healthy and normal, and when done by a man on a woman is now regarded as a mandatory part of sex.
However, this almost universal activity becomes uniquely taboo the moment that money is introduced into it. But I can pay for similar services to any other part of my body, and no one says a word. Odd, isn't it?
And once middle-massage becomes unlawful, it is usually controlled by criminals, and professional middle masseuses are usually beyond the protection of the law. Indeed, the whole business is so corrupted by prohibition that many middle masseuses are allegedly "trafficked" in the way that hairdressers and pedicurists seldom seem to be. Though I could be wrong: possibly containers with manipulators of tonsure and toe are smuggled in through Dublin docks at night, and their human cargoes secretly distributed to underground hairdressing and foot-rubbing parlours across the country.
At which point, enter the chorus of disapproving shrieks: I am making light of the trafficking of women as slave-prostitutes! I am trivialising the exploitation of the victims of organised rape! I am being flippant about a crime against humanity!
No I'm not. What I'm actually saying is that there is little or no involuntary trafficking of sex-workers, notwithstanding the allegations by John Cunningham of the Immigration Council of Ireland. He speaks of women and girls "being collected at Dublin Airport and taken to apartments where they were gang-raped for days". After being given "a few days to pull themselves together", they are put into brothels operating across Ireland.
Well, since every single aspect of this -- the kidnapping, the mass-rape, the forcible prostitution -- is already both against the law and comprehensively evil, why is another law needed? And anyway, most of his allegations are fable. A police survey in Britain was unable to find one single authentic case in which a foreign girl had been forcibly trafficked into the country for prostitution against her will. Allegations of kidnap and rape there have usually been made by illegal-immigrants in order to substantiate asylum-seeking claims.
Three years ago, the Swedish government appointed a judge, Anna Skarhed, to examine its anti-prostitution laws. Its directive stated that the inquiry could not suggest, or point in any direction other than that buying of sex should be criminalised. They chose the right person, for she ruled: "Based on a gender equality and human rights perspective . . . the distinction between voluntary and non-voluntary prostitution is not relevant."
This is classically Orwellian double-speak, in which the ideologically-defined abstracts of "equality" and "human rights" entirely invalidate the only absolute human concept, that of personal freedom. So, by Skarhedian standards, a working girl who genuinely chooses to provide middle massages for a living is no "freer" than a sexual galley-slave. Yes, she might think she is, and the galley slave will certainly think she is, but old Skarhed doesn't, and she's the thought-police and so her opinion counts.
Some women are "forced" into prostitution for economic reasons, goes the complaint. Possibly, says Pye Jakobsson, of the Rose Alliance of Swedish sex workers -- but is that any worse than having to clean up faeces in an old people's home?
Supporters of the Swedish whore-law declare that it has reduced the amount of prostitution there. But this is not a "fact", so much as a statement of faith. The Socialstyrelsen -- the Swedish Department of Health -- doesn't know how many sex workers in Sweden there are, and accepts that internet-driven prostitution is almost impossible to calculate or control.
Because this is usually a "crime" without a complainant, the claim that fewer clients are visiting middle masseuses is based on questionnaire-surveys of Swedish men. This surely is a criminological first: that a government tries to measure the levels of "crime" by asking the criminals to own up. Therefore -- no admission, no crime: QED. What a surprise.
The real intention of the Swedish law is certainly not to make life better for the middle masseuses. Anna Skarhed again: "We don't work with harm reduction in Sweden. Because that's not the way Sweden looks upon this. We see it as a ban on prostitution: there should be no prostitution."
Quite so. But history shows that moralising prohibitions upon human appetites never work. The likely consequences of the Swedish prohibition of prostitution will be that: a) prohibitionists feel very pleased with themselves, which of course is most important, and b) prostitution is driven deeper underground, so that yet even more middle masseuses will be controlled by violent pimps. How wonderful.

Hi Christy, I really do love your music :)
But the more shocked I was to discover you support the unfamous Sisters of Mercy in getting again a hold on us.
Please rethink your decision, only rights can stop the wrongs. Criminalisation of anybody involved in sex work only empowers pimps, the officials bribed by them and religious orders that want to exploit us.

Seit 3 Jahren keine verurteilten Täter
"Although comprehensive human trafficking legislation was introduced in this country in 2008, no one has yet been convicted."
"If you legalise prostitution pimps will simply become legitimate business men. Women will still be abused. Prostitution can never be a clean business. In countries where prostitution is legalised it has resulted in an increase in sex trafficking," said Gerardine Rowley of Ruhama, which works with women affected by prostitution.

Garda faces charges of corruption
By Noel Baker
Monday, April 18, 2011
A GARDA is facing charges of corruption after his role in facilitating an illegal trafficking and prostitution operation in the west of Ireland.
source: http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/ga ... 51732.html

Doctors call for buying sex to be made illegal
Delegates attending the first day of the annual conference of the Irish Medical Organisation in Killarney, Co Kerry, said this would be an important step in tackling the trafficking of illegal immigrants for the sex trade.
Source: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ire ... d14370fa,0
The Swedish government openly renounces harm reduction and are set to support fundamentalistic "morals" instead. Contemptible as this stance is for *anybody*, doctors aiming at doing harm to people should be more than ashamed.
Maybe they don't know what they're speaking about, but that's no excuse, that's further deception, as they use their degrees to impress people about their "knowledge".

Source: http://networkedblogs.com/htzqa
Rescue Industry history: Magdalene laundries in Ireland, sex workers enslaved
I realise that many people love Mary Magdalene, but the use by any contemporary project aimed at helping prostitutes of the name Magdalene evokes terrible associations. I see that a proect in Nashville, Tennessee, is doing just that, from an NPR story called Relapse And Recovery: A Tale Of Two Prostitutes. For those who have forgotten what Irish Magdalene laundries were (and the outrage that was felt when the truth came out about nuns enslaving fallen women), here are excerpts from an interesting story about Ireland called Red-light Alert, 10 April 2011, The Independent. Note the author calls these Rescue Industry folk the church’s lay stormtroopers in a religious war which, in this time and place, is not about evangelical Christians but Roman Catholics.
Monto was, by all accounts, the biggest and busiest red-light district in the Europe of its era. . . In Ulysses, Joyce refers to the place as Nighttown. The young hero Stephen, his friend Lynch, and the middle-aged cuckold Leopold Bloom end up there after an evening’s boozing. Stephen and Lynch go for the fairly straightforward experience. But Bloom is there for the sexual humiliation via a dominatrix at a joint run by “Bello”. Bello was the real-life Bella Cohen, who actually did run an establishment that provided for the kinkier end of the trade in Monto. Around the corner in Montgomery Street was the top-end-of-the-market brothel run by Annie Mack, whose beautiful young women attracted rich clients including, it is rumoured, the then Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, who indeed was a frequent visitor to Dublin. At its height it is said that 1,600 women worked in Monto from the lowest and cheapest houses . . . to the most expensive . . .
. . . Its demise is well documented. That happened within only a few years of the foundation of the State and the accession to power of the Roman Catholic church. The church’s lay stormtroopers, the Legion of Mary, did the job, led by its inquisitor-in-chief, Frank Duff. War was declared on Monto. The new Catholic state stormed into action and a force of gardai and legionnaires raided Monto at midnight on March 12, 1925, and literally threw the women working there out on to the street and into the Church-run slave-labour laundries. Offended Catholic sensibilities were put right and the women were cast out.
The saddest street in Ireland was, and, to this day, remains Railway Street, off which Bella Cohen once ran her S&M joint, and where the rear walls of the Magdalene Laundry remain, a crucifix still standing over its jail-like entrance. That’s the place for them hussies, the paedo priests must have thought to themselves. The laundry was the last of the Magdalenes to close, in 1996. Up to the Seventies, young ‘fallen’ women were still being imprisoned in this hell-hole. It had official recognition from the Government as a remand prison. The girls — “penitents” — were given assumed religious names just like the nuns and enslaved, often never to see freedom. There are places like that today in the world, in Iran. Many of the Irish girls who went into this or the other laundries never came out. Some 133 unmarked graves were found in another Magdalene in Drumcondra a few years ago.
No one would ever countenance that sort of thing here again. No one would ever think that the religious orders of nuns who ran these concentration camps would do anything other than spend the rest of their days repenting their crimes against humanity. No one would, surely not? Magdalene, the fallen woman rescued by Christ. Magdalene, the laundries run by nuns from four Catholic religious orders: The Sisters of Mercy, The Sisters of Our Lady of Charity, The Sisters of Charity and The Good Shepherd Sisters.
Strangely, prostitution did not disappear in Ireland. Those girls who escaped the laundry became streetwalkers around the Grand Canal and St Stephen’s Green. As is the case with streetwalkers, they were often beaten, robbed, forced to perform free for corrupt gardai and occasionally murdered.

Church accused of ignoring Magdalene Laundry survivors
... According to the Irish Times, Boston College Professor Jim Smith has now written to the Archbishop saying he was heartened by the interview but was upset by the lack of response from those involved.
Prof Smith told the Times that he had written to the four congregations involved in running the laundries - the Sisters of Mercy, Sisters of Charity, Good Shepherd Sisters, and Sisters of Our Lady of Charity – when he had previously written to the Archbishop.
“Finally, last June, I heard directly from the Good Shepherd Sisters and the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity and they informed me that they didn’t feel there was ‘anything to talk about’ and that they would not meet with JFM,” revealed Prof Smith. ...

Was lehrt uns das?

I think the time for well thought out and articulate arguments against the visit has well and truly passed. Fuck the Queen! #queensvisit
