Frieden und Sexshops

ANNE CADWALLANDER

Bisher jedenfalls.

Escort agencies luring students into prostitution to pay for college

Escort agencies are encouraging students to take up work as prostitutes.

The Irish Independent has learned that many students are turning to prostitution to fund increasingly costly college lifestyles, in some cases estimated at more than €7,000 a year.

One student confirmed he was working as an escort to fund his way through college and was earning from €160 for an hour to €500 for a 12-hour overnight stay.

And adverts by male and female students, some as young as 18, are selling their services on the internet forum "Escort Ireland Network".

One agency said students could earn up to €135 an hour as an escort, with the potential of earning €2,000 a week.

Student prostitution has become a serious problem in other European countries, particularly in Britain.

Education Minister Mary Hanafin said she was "appalled" that any young person would turn to prostitution and pointed out there was assistance available for students with financial difficulties.

But Labour's Education spokesperson, Jan O'Sullivan, called on the department to take "responsibility" for the situation.

"This is definitely an indication that going to college is getting increasingly costly. It's very worrying that student's feel they have to go to such lengths," she said.

Cash

Some of those advertising their services on websites include: * "A good looking 19-year-old Waterford student" who said he was a "tall, fit and attractive student badly in need of a few quid".

*A 21-year-old female student called "Lady Lisa" who was "trying to earn some cash.

"I am new to this, but very open minded," she added.

One student, who did not want to be named, told how he got involved through another friend who was also on the game.

'Alan' deals only with gay men and is using it as a way to fund his studies.

The final year student has been working as a male prostitute for the past three years but says he would "die" if his family or friends found out.

The 21-year-old started off with a gay escort agency in Cork and there were four other students also working there.

In Dublin, he said, there were more students on the scene.

At least three escort agencies, Teasers in Limerick, Dublin-based CityWest Models and Dublin Models, advertise the fact they have student on their books.

"Some of the girls are college students, studying at the University of Limerick," according to Teasers.

Thousands of British students are believed to have turned to the sex industry.

Research by Kingston University in southwest London found that one in 10 students had friends who had stripped, lapdanced or worked at massage parlours and escort agencies to support themselves.

President of the Union of Students (USI), Richie Morrisroe, said it was "not surprising" that people felt they had to turn to prostitution given the shortfall in financial support available to students.

"It really is shocking. It's really sad that people are turning to prostitution," said Mr Morrisroe.

"It's definitely a concern. But I can understand why people feel they have to turn to something like this. It is extremely expensive to manage all of the expenses that come with going to college," he said.

The prostitution aid and lobby group, Ruhama, said it was seriously "seriously concerned" that anyone would consider prostitution as an "easy option" to meet any financial commitments.

"When entering prostitution, you are entering an environment which is extremely harmful and dangerous to women", said Ms Geraldine Rowley, head of the group.

"When entering prostitution, you are entering an environment which is extremely harmful and dangerous to women", said Ms Geraldine Rowley, head of the group.

"he would "die" if his family or friends found out"

Kerb crawling to become offence on Ulster's streets

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

By Sam Lister

Kerb crawling in Ulster will become an offence for the first time under new legislation to be introduced later this year.

SDLP MP Alasdair McDonnell told policing minister Paul Goggins kerb crawling was "still a major issue" in parts of his south Belfast constituency and needed to be tackled urgently.

But the minister insisted that men who cruise the streets of Northern Ireland looking for prostitutes would soon face prosecution under the changes in the law.

Speaking at the Commons Northern Ireland Grand Committee Mr Goggins said: "We are going to change the law to introduce this as a specific offence."

Campaigners have been calling for Northern Ireland to be brought into line with England and Wales, where kerb crawling is a criminal offence.

Nine out of 10 people who responded to a consultation last year on the province's sex offence laws supported calls for it to be made a crime, with many backing Dr McDonnell's claims it had become a significant problem in the south of the city.

The committee also quizzed the minister on the controversial 50% remission sentencing policy, with DUP politician Sammy Wilson accusing the government of "dragging its feet" over its plans to abolish it.

The East Antrim MP quizzed the minister over whether a rapist who filmed his attack of a young girl on her mobile phone, then sent it to her mother, would be let out after serving half his sentence.

Mr Goggins said he wanted to assure the committee that effective systems were already in place to deal with sex offenders in Northern Ireland.

He added: "I don't accept that the government has been dragging its feet.

"It has taken some time to draft legislation but it was important that is was done properly so the law works in practice.

" Certainly I intend to end 50% remission at the earliest opportunity for violent perpetrators, including sex offenders."

But he admitted that any change in the law would not affect offenders already in jail.

He added: "Public protection is my number responsibility and it goes to the heart of policy."

Trafficked prostitutes not to be deported

02 December 2007 By John Burke

Women trafficked into Ireland for prostitution will no longer be deported or jailed on conviction, and will instead receive treatment and counselling, in a dramatic shift in the approach aimed at tackling human trafficking.

It is understood that justice minister Brian Lenihan will introduce a provision in the forthcoming Immigration, Residency and Protection Bill to allow foreign women who gardai believe have been coerced into working in brothels to remain indefinitely in the state and claim residency.

This new approach - which is already being used in Italy and Portugal - is aimed at encouraging women trafficked into the state for sexual exploitation to provide assistance in criminal investigations. The move follows the signing earlier this year of the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings.

The convention allows suspected victims of trafficking to avail of a period of recovery and reflection.

However, there is also provision for victims to be granted residence permits where it is believed that their stay here is necessary of their cooperation in an investigation or with criminal proceedings.

The adoption of these provisions in the forthcoming legislation is among a raft of measures that have seen the focus shift from punitive measures against foreign women engaged in prostitution, to tackling organised crime gangs involved in people-trafficking into Ireland.

Lenihan has said that at least 76 women have been identified as victims of trafficking into Ireland for sexual exploitation in the past seven years.

He has included strict penalties for convicted traffickers under the new Criminal Law (Human Trafficking) Bill 2007.

The Labour Party justice spokesman, Pat Rabbitte, has said that the figure of 76 women is likely to represent ‘‘only the tip of the iceberg’’, due to the ‘‘invisibility of the sex industry’’.

Rape Crisis Network slams Cannon over prostitution claims

Sunday, 25 May 2008
By Jessica Higgins

Legalising prostitution in this country would only make pimps and sex-traffickers legitimate businessmen, that's according to the Rape Crisis Network, who this week hit back at the PD leader's calls for the business to be legalised.
A spokesperson for the Rape Crisis Network said that such a measure would not increase the safety of the women being "exploited" as part of the sex-trade.
The Rape Crisis Network added that the issues Senator Cannon should be addressing are the criminals involved in prostitution, and the men who are paying for sex.
"Women who get involved in prostitution are extremely vulnerable, and children as young as 14 are being exploited. The law should see prostitutes as victims who are there because of their circumstances, and not as a legitimate business choice," a spokesperson said.
The PD leader said in an interview with Thursday's Hot Press magazine, by legalising prostitution, the Government would be taking the responsible approach.
Senator Cannon also said that these women shouldn't be criminalised and should be protected from exploitation under Irish law.
But the Rape Crisis Network hit out at his comments and added that prostitutes will always be linked to criminal activity, and legalising it will not protect the women from suffering abuse at the hands of those who control the industry.
"It would only mainstream the ideology of the sex-industry, that women's bodies are there to be objectified and exploited. This attitude will then pass on to the younger generation of men.
"Legalising it has not been successful in Amsterdam, that's why they're considering reversing their laws. We need to focus on protecting these women," a spokesperson said.
Senator Cannon's party colleague local councillor Terry O'Flaherty refused to agree with her party leader. She said, "Ciaran is a very compassionate person and would have made the comments he made to protect the women involved in this awful trade.
"What I would like to see is that prostitution be completely eliminated, but that is not likely to happen as it is the oldest profession in the history books."
Cllr O'Flaherty also addressed the issue of the number of prostitutes who have been murdered over the years, including some being "burnt to death," and believes that it is an extremely dangerous industry for women to become involved in.
"There are highly skilled legal minded people in this country and it is their job to address this issue and come up with the appropriate legislation to deal with it," concluded Cllr O' Flaherty.

A brave stance on sex workers

Sunday, 25 May 2008

So the Hot Press bug bit again last week and another political leader comes up with a controversial nugget that got tongues wagging. Not too long ago our new Taoiseach admitted to smoking pot, and now Galway's own Ciaran Cannon pipes up in support of the legalisation of prostitution.
"If a woman sets up in her own home and sells sexual favours, it is not against the law. I believe women in that situation should not be criminalised. However, I would like to see greater involvement of the State in looking after women involved in the sex industry," said the PD leader.
Of course the issue of prostitution's legality is unlikely to be a big vote-getter in next year's local elections, but Senator Cannon should be praised for being brave enough to take a stance on such a sensitive issue.
Responding to Senator Cannon's call, the Rape Crisis Network of Ireland, in today's Galway First, argued that the legalisation of the world's oldest industry would make pimps and sex-traffickers legitimate businessmen.
But why do prostitutes go to pimps in the first place? For protection in the vicious criminal underworld.
The legalisation of the industry would afford these unfortunate women a protection from the State, a State that right now sees them as criminals.
Mary Harney, responding to her party leader's comments, said she would love to see the eradication of prostitution, but admitted such a fantasy was naive. She is, of course, right. Once again simple economics dictate that as long as there is a demand for prostitution the industry will remain, as it has for thousands of years.
Legalisation would provide a degree of protection to the hundreds of women employed in what will always be a seedy activity. It would remove prostitutes from organised crime, granting them the State's protection. Criminalisation of women in prostitution is a waste of time.

Kommentar/Hintergrundinformationen (English) hier: http://www.irishleftreview.org/2010/10/ ... ns-rights/

Priest played Elvis music to drown child's screams

Notorious Irish pedophile gets sixteen years
By
JAMES O'SHEA
,
IrishCentral.com Staff Writer

A Dublin priest who raped a seven-year-old young boy on the altar, after tying him up with cords from his vestments and playing Elvis Presley songs to drown his screams, was sentenced to 16 years for abusing young boys.

Tony Walsh, 57, was a famous member of a priests music group known for his Elvis impersonations. He was a serial molester whose activities were known to senior figures in the Dublin archdiocese who overlooked his crimes.

Walsh's activities took up an entire chapter in the recent Murphy report on priestly abuse in the Dublin archdiocese. He was not actually named in that report as his case was continuing.

During sentencing Judge Frank O’Donnell called Walsh a “serial offender” who had inflicted a “life sentence” on one of his victims.

“It is difficult to imagine more reprehensible circumstances than a priest in confession setting about the sexual abuse of a young boy,” the judge said. “This is a gross breach of trust, and that’s putting it mildly.”

The court was told how “David” (not his real name), was tied up cords from his vestments before he raped him.

When the boy cried in pain, Walsh turned up an Elvis record to drown out the noise. Afterwards he told the kid he would “burn in hell for all eternity” if he told anyone.

David gave evidence during a victim impact statement “Following the abuse, I turned to drink and drugs to numb the pain,” David said. “My trust was gone towards people . . . When I was around 16, I attempted suicide. It was the first of numerous attempts.”

David admitted himself into a psychiatric hospital after the sentencing.

“I have been diagnosed as suffering from severe bouts of psychotic depression...” he said. “Because of all this, I will be on medication for the rest of my life.”

Another victim, “Noel”, stated this parents would not believe him when said he was abused. “My mother said: ‘How could you say that about a man of the cloth, a man of God?’ My father gave me a hiding which started in the kitchen and finished in the bedroom.”

The third victim, “Tim”, said the abuse had devastated him.

“I remember lying face-down, while Mr Walsh lay on top of me, making gyrating movements . . . I remember thinking, ‘When will this be over, when can I leave?’”

Despite being defrocked Tony Walsh turned up in 1994 at a , posing as a priest. After the Mass, he sexually assaulted he 11-year-old grandson of the deceased in the toilets.

Following the sentencing, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin said . “I can only unreservedly apologise to the victims of this man for what they endured and for the way in which the diocese failed them.”

http://www.irishcentral.com/news/New-se ... 94329.html

Man jailed for consensual relationship with a 14-year-old girl

Thursday, January 20, 2011 - 07:52 PM

A man who was 24 years old when he was having a consensual sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl has been jailed for eight months after serving 18 months in prison on remand.

The girl told gardaí, as she refused to give a victim impact statement, that the main effect on her was she could no longer see the man. Her family had asked for the charges to be withdrawn.

The now 26-year-old man pleaded guilty to a sexual act with a child under the age of 15 at a Dublin address between dates in 2008. He has no previous convictions.

Judge Martin Nolan said the 18 months the man has served in custody to date was, taking into account remission, equivalent to a 22-month-sentence and he imposed a further eight months from today’s date.

He said that the legislation takes a view that “sex with children has a serious and deleterious effect on the child” and had been enacted to protect children from third parties and from themselves.

Judge Nolan said the girl’s family and the accused knew what had happened was wrong but considered it “not that very wrong”.

Garda Karen McCloat told Mr Shane Costelloe BL, prosecuting, that the girl had been reported as missing by her mother and garda ascertained that she had been seen in the company of the accused.

Gardaí attended at his home and found him and the girl there. The girl said she had been living with the man for about a month and considered him to be her boyfriend. She accepted she had sex with him.

The accused man told gardaí he was aware of her age and knew what he was doing was wrong.

Gda McCloat agreed with Ms Anne Maire Lawlor BL, defending, that the girl had been told by her father if she wanted to live with the man “off you go”.

She agreed the girl wanted to live with the man, was not being “preyed upon”, and believed herself to be in love.

Gda McCloat told Judge Nolan that the girl’s parents had not reported her missing immediately and they had hoped she would come back by herself.

Ms Lawlor said this was a very unusual case which could not have proceeded without the accused man’s admissions as the girl had indicated she would not be a trial witness.

She handed in a letter to Judge Nolan from the girl’s mother asking that the charges be withdrawn and saying she did not believe her daughter to be kidnapped and did not wish the accused to get into trouble.

Ms Lawlor submitted that what had occurred was “a consensual relationship albeit an illegal one and he is now facing the consequences”.
