Farley attributes the figure to several sources, including “Victimization of Street Prostitutes” by M.H. Silbert and A.M. Pines; a 1985 study with an even more melodramatic name, “Children of the Night” by D. Kelly Weisberg; and something called “Oppression Disguised as Liberation” by Denise Gamache and Evelina Giobbe.
As so often happens, the bogus “fact” is based on a (possibly deliberate) distortion of a miscalculation in a deeply-flawed, badly-structured 2001 study by Richard Estes and Neil Weiner of the University of Pennsylvania entitled “The Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in the U. S., Canada and Mexico”, which is also the source of the ubiquitous (and equally erroneous) claim that “100,000-300,000 American children are trafficked as sexual slaves”. [siehe dazu auch hier.]
The “13 at entry” figure was only for underage prostitutes, not for all prostitutes.
Maggie McNeill calculates that the better guestimate would be age of entry 24-26 years.

Debunking another false statement “Prostitution has always been risky for women; the average age of death is 34, and the American Journal of Epidemiology reported that prostitutes suffer a ‘workplace homicide rate’ 51 times higher than that of the next most dangerous occupation, working in a liquor store.”
[That is] a study of arrested streetwalkers, and therefore bases its conclusions on the most unfortunate third of the most dangerous segment of prostitution.
[The figure] is badly misstated from the actual finding that the average murdered streetwalker is 34.

First time that a great independent(?)-critical political site evaluates a claim of the abolitionists:

Although this is very helpful I am encouraging people to write to the source, writer and editor because the categorization of "Half-True" makes no sense. It's NOT true!
Dear Editors,
I object to your mis-categorization of the myth of age of entry into prostitution AT 12-14 as "Half-True." Your own article explains that it's just not true.
" ...there are some studies -- but missing important detail. The studies speak only to juveniles, and the studies themselves are speculative. There is no nationally representative, comprehensive sample. We rate the statement Half True."
Why do you rate this Half True? Because SOME people are 12 or 14? That doesn't make it Half True!
Take this comparison:
A study of drivers UNDER 18 shows that "The average age of drivers under eighteen is 16. "
But if someone held that studies show that "The average age of people who drive automobiles is 16," that would not be a "half-truth"...it would be outright false because it is untrue about the whole population.
Why would you call that "Half-true?" Is it because prostitutes are not a valid group of people, like drivers, for instance? Why take extra liberty with this population, especially in light of the fact that it's common to misrepresent us.
For many, many years prostitution abolitionists have spread these statistics knowing full well that these stats referred to studies on juveniles, but ostensibly many believed it was worth the fib/manipulation to make their points about prostitution. Now it is almost an accepted fact, as you know.
I was happy to see that you actually did refute it, but I am confused by your logic in calling something that you found false, to be "Half-True."
I hope you can respond or change this! Thanks!
